Maximize Your Job Search with ChatGPT: A Modern Approach

Introduction to AI for job search

Welcome to the dynamic world of job hunting, where the traditional methods of searching for a new role are being revolutionized by artificial intelligence. As a professional candidate, you're likely familiar with the usual rigmarole of job searching. But have you considered enlisting an AI companion in your quest? Enter ChatGPT, your digital ally in navigating the job market. Let's explore how this tool can add a cutting-edge advantage to your job search strategy. (OpenAI, 2023)

You can use ChatGPT too!

Signing up for ChatGPT is free, and you can do that here: https://chat.openai.com. If you are unfamiliar with ChatGPT, here is a great introduction, written by the tool itself:

“ChatGPT is an advanced conversational AI developed by OpenAI, designed to simulate human-like text interactions. It’s a tool that job seekers can leverage for interview preparation, resume building, and even for drafting professional emails or LinkedIn messages. With its deep understanding of language and context, ChatGPT can provide nuanced advice and suggestions, helping candidates present themselves effectively to potential employers. As a user-friendly platform, it’s accessible to a broad audience, including those new to AI, making it an invaluable asset in the modern job search toolkit.

Using ChatGPT to find jobs you are qualified for

Wouldn't it be great to have AI help you find jobs that match your skills, experiences, and leadership ability? Oftentimes candidates may miss opportunities because they do not even know some of the vast jobs available for their skillset. ChatGPT can help! Follow these basics steps to see what jobs you may be interested in:

  1. Go to https://chat.openai.com/ and click on “New Chat”

  2. Type in the prompt: “Based on my resume, what jobs would I excel at? (Paste your resume here)” and click “Send Message” (Maman, 2023)

  3. As a follow up to that response, you can type: “What are five other jobs that I could be well suited for” (Maman, 2023)

The following tutorial video will help you to create a curated list of potential jobs that you can explore within the alignment of your resume, skills, and experiences.

Research a recommended job that sparks your interest

To find a job that sparks your interest, I am going to recommend that you utilize a combination of ChatGPT and Google Jobs Search.

ChatGPT data for version 3.5 (the free version) is limited to 2021, and technically the tool is not connected to the internet, so searching for live job postings is currently out of the question. You can use ChatGPT to help you learn more about the types of companies that hire for specific jobs, and more about what specific jobs entail.  Follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://chat.openai.com/ and open the chat window you utilized above

  2. Find one of the Job Titles that interest you from the ChatGPT recommendations

  3. Type in the prompt: “Tell me more about the job entitled [Insert Job Title]”

  4. As a follow-up to that response, you can type: “What kind of companies hire for a Talent Sourcer”

Once you have a job title that looks interesting to you and that matches your resume, skills, and abilities (thanks to the help of ChatGPT), you can use Google Jobs Search to help you find openings that match that title. I like Google Jobs search because it picks up a lot of postings around the web, and makes them searchable by Google Search prowess. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://www.google.com

  2. Type in the “Job Title” with the word jobs (example: Talent Sourcer Jobs)

  3. A Google Jobs box will appear near the top of the search

  4. If you click the link that says “100+ more jobs”, it will expand and allow you to research more about companies and locations hiring for that position.

Practice your interview with ChatGPT

Once you have decided on a job title and company that you would like to pursue further, ChatGPT can help you learn more about skills that you need to sharpen for that job, and even become a practice partner for interview questions. Using my example of the Talent Sourcer job for the company Vaco, I am going to show you how to accomplish this with the following prompts.

Learn more about skills you need to sharpen for a job using ChatGPT:

  • Go to https://chat.openai.com/ and click on “New Chat”

  • Type in the prompt: “What would a recruiter at Vaco hiring for a Talent Sourcer find positive and negative about my resume (paste your resume)” (Maman, 2023)

Practice a Mock Interview with ChatGPT:

  • Go to https://chat.openai.com/ and click on “New Chat”

  • Type in the prompt: “I want you to act as the interviewer for the Talent Sourcer role at Vaco. I will be the candidate and you will ask me the interview questions. I want you to only reply as the interviewer. Ask me the questions one at a time waiting for my response before asking the next questions as an interviewer does. Let’s begin with “Hello, my name is Steve”” (Maman, 2023)

Wrapping Things Up With More Tips!

As you get more comfortable with ChatGPT, I encourage you to ask more follow-up questions to the prompts given above, and even have the tool help you draft emails to potential employers. As a best practice, use AI as a guideline/outline, but always be sure to use your professional material, and give credit where credit is due.

We are truly just beginning to see all of the ways that ChatGPT and other AI tools are impacting our day-to-day efficiencies. I believe that AI is the next great tool to help us become more efficient in our day-to-day careers and personal lives. I don’t think it is here to replace jobs, I think it is here to help us operate more effectively, and to create new jobs and skill sets.
